"It was at just 9 weeks old that the whirlwind of illness began with Jasmine’s first biopsy. A few weeks later, the diagnosis came: Langerhans cell histiocytosis, followed shortly after by the start of chemotherapy.

Our first contact at the hematology-oncology unit was with Leucan. A comforting presence that provided the listening ear we so badly needed. From then on, they were there at each of our visits, offering moral support.

In June 2022, I noticed an odd lump in my neck. Six months later, I saw my doctor at the CHUS Fleurimont. After several tests, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which is very rare in children. On March 22, 2023, I had an operation to remove my thyroid gland and all my lymph nodes on the right side. A few days later, while I was still reeling from what had happened, a Leucan representative came to see me at the hospital. It was such a heartwarming visit, and I received some gifts that did me so much good. It was the light at the end of the tunnel, because from then on I knew I was in good hands.

Leucan is like my second family, one that understands me when things are rough, but also when things are going well. It’s probably the only family that truly understands what I’m going through. My Leucan family includes children who’ve been through a similar ordeal. It’s this experience that defines us as a person. It’s our story.

I got to know this new family during the autumn camp with the Heart-filled Hope support group. It was one of the best weekends of my life! I was welcomed into an incredible family with open arms. All the people I met there are simply beautiful. That’s how I created a new family for myself.

I’m here today to pay it forward—to give to others what I was so fortunate to receive.
